West Coast

Start your West Coast adventure by travelling from Christchurch to Greymouth onboard the Tranz Alpine. This magnificent rail journey winds its way across the Canterbury Plains and Waimakariri Gorge area through the Main Divide to the West Coast. Rental cars can be arranged at Greymouth Station or your host / guide will meet you at Greymouth Station for those on a private tour.

North from Greymouth is one of the most stunning roads you can drive on in New Zealand as State Highway 6 snakes along the coast of the Tasman Sea with thick native bush (forest) on the other side. The Pancake Rocks at Punakaiki are a must see while on the West Coast. You can carry on north from here to Nelson and Golden Bay / Abel Tasman region.

Stop in at the Tree Top Walk, just south of Hokitika, as well as the stunning Hokitika Gorge and Lake Kaniere. Take your bikes with you, the Westland has some fantastic cycleways to try out, you could spend a number of days exploring this region by bike.

Further south are Fox and Franz Josef Glaciers. A visit to New Zealand's West Coast is not complete until you have walked up or landed on either Fox or Franz Josef Glacier. We have fixed wing and helicopter flights available as well as guided walks on the glaciers. Try out the hot pools at Franz Josef and visit the Kiwi House to get a close up view of our native bird, you may even be lucky enough to see one in the wild on the West Coast. Okarito Lagoon is the home to the Kotuku/white heron, local tours are available to view them.

Kayaking and lake cruises are also available in South Westland.

South of the glaciers is another stunning drive towards Haast and eventually on to Wanaka, Queenstown and Central Otago.
