Wellington – Kapiti Island Sanctuary – New Plymouth – Taupo – Hobbiton – Auckland (visit to Waiheke Island).

 

 


Wellington

Wellington is the capital and third-most populous urban area of New Zealand. It is located at the south-western tip of the North Island, between Cook Strait and the Remutaka Range. Wellington is the major population centre of the southern North Island, anIt is the worlds southernmost capital of a sovereign state. 

Kapiti Island Sanctuary

Kapiti Island is an island about 5 km (3 mi) off the west coast of the lower North Island of New Zealand. It is 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) long, running southwest/northeast, and roughly 2 kilometres (1.2 mi) wide, being more or less rectangular in shape, and has an area of 19.65 km2 (7.59 sq mi)The island's vegetation is dominated by scrub and forest of kohekohe, tawa, and kanuka. Most of the forest is regenerating after years of burn-offs and farming, but some areas of original bush with 30 m (98 ft) trees remain. Kapiti Island is a tranquil island bird sanctuary and one of New Zealand’s most accessible nature reserves. It's a unique visitor experience in a predator-free paradise. Get up close and personal with rare birds such as kākā, kōkako, takahē and hihi. Wander tracks fringed with dense forest or climb the 521 m peak for panoramic views.

New Plymouth

New Plymouth is the major city of the Taranaki Region on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand.  Notable features are the botanic gardens (i.e. Pukekura Park), the critically acclaimed Len Lye Centre and Art Gallery, the 11 km (6.8 mi) Coastal Walkway alongside the Tasman Sea, the Len Lye-designed 45-metre-tall (148 ft) artwork known as the Wind Wand, Paritutu Rock, and views of Mount Taranaki/Egmont. It is also noted for being a coastal city with a mountain within 30 minute’s drive, where residents and visitors to New Plymouth can snowboard, ski, water ski and surf all in the same day.

Taupo

Taupo is a town on the shore of Lake Taupo, which occupies the caldera of the Taupo Volcano in the centre of the North Island of New Zealand. 

Hobbiton (Matamata)

A nearby farm was the location for the Hobbiton movie set in Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings. This is a must to visit when touring New Zealand.

Auckland

Auckland is a city in the North Island of New Zealand, and the country's largest city.  Auckland is a diverse, multicultural and cosmopolitan city, home to the largest Polynesian population in the world.

Waiheke Island

Waiheke Island is the most populated and second-largest island in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand. Its ferry terminal in Matiatia Bay at the western end is 21.5 km (13.4 mi) from the central-city terminal in Auckland.
